We evangelise XML for many reasons, primarily because, we feel that there will be many long-term benefits of using XML, mainly due to storing data in an open and machine readable form. Unlike other data formats, it is unlikely to disappear (consider whether you can read a Wordstar file from 10 years ago on your machine today!).

A key driving force behind business to business communication is of course standards. In the EDI world, these were defined by the EDIFACT, Tradacoms and ANSI standards bodies. There are already many industry initiatives defining XML Schema as the XML document standards are known. Inevitably, there are a vast number of standards already and at Shared Skills, we have developed a suite of tools to enable us to convert between different XML standards.

Another great benefit of using XML comes in the form of XSL style sheets. These style sheets enable the raw XML to be converted to a human readable form simply by viewing the data in a web browser. This simple mechanism provides huge benefits over the complex techniques which had to be used with conventional EDI to extract meaning from the data.
